My brother and his colleagues made this :)
Here’s another one they did for Volvo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar-sVuv63dM.
Currently they are in Denmark showing their latest projection made for the Copenhagen Climate Conference 2009.

Hi there Barry, its my final year in university , and I’m really interested in incorporating projection mapping into my final project , but the problem is that i can’t find any tutorials about the 3d projection , and i would be gratefully thankful if you were able to help by any means ..

wow man you aren’t really that bright, that video was taken and then edited, not projected on the building, lolol look at the video, that’s hilarious you thought they projected that… people believe anything these days.

Dude. Nick. If you watch in the videos, you can see people watching/recording the projections.
Stop it. Be more observant before you show off your innate ignorance.
Don’t bother replying to this, because it’s just a passing comment. I simply Stumbled upon this page. Farewell, and heed my warning, sir.

Nope, it’s real. It’s a successful business that will do displays on any building if you pay them. Just because “PhotoShop” and “After Effects” exist, doesn’t mean everyone uses them. Some of us actually leave the house!
Why is it so far fetched that someone could project something onto a building? Which is actually EASIER than editing the video (trust me, I do it for a really, really large TV network with mouse ears). Not everything is a big conspiracy to trick you, personally.
….people don’t believe anything these days.

I thought the same thing for a second then I saw some more live videos and other people who recorded it and sure enough it is real. This version is taken with a really good camera which captures perfect detail, which might make it look a bit fake, but sure enough it isn’t.

actually nick is right, while some people do actually do stuff like this for a job, this is not an actuall display project, you can tell at 1:40 where the blue ball is encircling the collumns. sometimes the ball goes slightly outside the collumn, which is just not possible

hey you’re a bit lazy aren’t you all that argues, saying it’s fake just click on the NuFormer Digital Media. link just above the video and see the video in standard quality.. I don’t if the video was edited/enhanced or the cam used in this version of the video was “weird” but the video is not a fake… Go look at the lower quality or original first before you argue with me.. You’ll see what I am talking about.

Dunno if previous comment (by nick) is just trolling or if he’s seriously arguing this was a video editing trick. There’re several times in the video where you can quite clearly see it’s projection on a building, 00:39 being the most obvious.

I don’t know why I thought of this but this would be a great tool for protesters (if they protested at night lol) where they could project all sorts of stuff on buldings of the organisations that they are protesting against…

If this is real, I’m very impressed. Is that London?
If it isn’t fake (ie. a cgi layer tracked to video, rather than a live projection), we have to assume that:
1. Since the image is being projected on the uneven surface of the building (many angles and columns), the graphics had to be stretched and skewed to make the final image look ‘normal’ to viewers. The only non-distorted, non-pillar-shadowed view would be from projector location.
2. During the ‘swinging white-blue banners’ sequence(02:16), the projector had to hide the features of the underlying building, while shining bright white light on them. OR, the camcorder’s exposure is blowing it out.
3. I’m hallucinating when I see images slightly above the roof line (6″ maybe?) throughout the entire show.
To me it looks like an digital overlay in post, with about 90% opacity, and the standard web compression blur, with the viewers inserted in kind or staged in background video. What a viral, bold lie this would be if I’m right, but I hope I’m wrong!
The other NuFormer vids looked real, but this seems to be a falsified ideal creation based on the video ‘wow’ posted of the actual live event. Barry, he’s your brother, what’s the real scoop?

First off, I have watch their other videos of life performances. They do not look anywhere as impressive as this one. So what does that tell me? There is something different between them and this one. My guess is that this one is fake. Not as in it couldn’t have been done but fake as in they could have but just chose to overlay it instead.
The biggest differences being:
1) The contrast ratio on this video is pretty high, something that is difficult to do when projecting something and then recording it in any digital format HD or not.
2) There is also the fact that the clouds move very very fast, most noticeable at (2:11).
3) The image is also very clear and the edges of projected images are very fine. I find this hard to believe that the projector is that in focus at all depths of the building with all the light bouncing off the deepest parts.
4) There is also a “blast” of light that extends off of both sides of the building at (3:11). What is the projector projecting onto? Nothing? Its not just a glow of off air pollution it is a very clear line.
Combine those with Zachm’s reasons and I believe it is a project that could have been real but the artists decided against actually preforming the show.

I agree with nick. it’s edited. They do it in the real life, it’s true, but in this case it’s edited. I saw on of this performances in Barcelona, it was awesome, but any light can make dissapear the windows, as it happens in this video in some parts (for example when there are bricks up and down across the windows). In barcelona it was exactly the same but, inevitably, we still can see the windows, for example.
Dec 09, 2009 @ 11:48:32
The dude
While still pretty cool, I have to agree that there seems to be some post-production on this video. When you watch the live performance posted by “wow” (12/8/09 9:02pm) you can definitely still see the contours and shadows created by the building–contours and shadows that seem to be all but nonexistent in this video.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a neat video though.

Big thumbs up for the concept and post production. Very coooool!
Anyone coming in here to mouth off the ones that were smart enough to spot it isn’t a true projection: give us a break!
This type of projection has to have lighting effects on the adjacent buildings. None exist.
Why are people stopping to watch the building? If you film a monument long enough you will have footage with people stopping to look. In post production you just use it to your advantage.
Again: cudos for the vid!!

You can tell the people are fake; their movements are too fluid to be real. Also the “birds” that fly across the screen are fake as well. It’s pretty clear that the entire piece is animated.

. Great article and disucssion!
I’ve been doing some serious research about the positioning of buttons in forms in general. And what I’ve come up with is to put the “Primary Action”-button left-aligned with the form. One of the reasons for doing this is that the eye automatically searches for a new form element to the left just under the previous element.

This is fake from what I can tell, im not one of these idiots that just presumes its fake because it seems so unlikely. At around the 3:10 mark, the illusion that the light is coming from inside the windows goes too far and actually goes off the building, but the image doesnt stop, it continues to shine on nothingness, if you pause it at 3:13 you can see it come out as far as the branches of the tree, cool dont get me wrong but just not real unfortunately!

Well, this is a beautiful vid’, comparing the live footage on the other link tells me this : this is the project pre-vis, used to sell it off to clients/local authorities, so it did happen, as we see on the link given by… uh… “WOW”, and the final result is insane!
Flawless models overlapping the building perfectly… very interesting use of the architecture, lots of good ideas and good skills up front too.

To all the people who think this is fake: this is real. When I was in Israel I saw a light show like this and it was very similar to the way this works. They use a ton of projectors to get the angles that are necessary for the different things.

You’re all wrong! It’s not a projection nor is it editing. It’s a a process you don’t really understand but you appreciate the results and then try and explain them away to show you’re smarter than other people. That means…. it must be magic!

its not possible to project 3d images on buildings, its like 3d cinema you would need glasses to assemble several projected images to turn it into a 3d image that comes out at you, it would require 3d glasses! you can project onto buildings but it would need something amazing to pull off that level of projection, i personally think its done on a computer, if you where seeing something that amazing everyone would stop to watch it but bottom everyone walks past few people looking thats probably because the building is impressive without the projected image! and pretty sure saw same cyclist go past every-time!
Apr 23, 2010 @ 04:01:46
Max.
Obviously the whole thing is a fake because in 1:43 you can clearly see an “F” for fake… or maybe “F” for fail because i reckon its real mebbe some aftertouches but still very nice so why bother arguing if its real or not just enjoy it.

It’s fake you noobs. People are stoping and looking because they are tourist. If it were real more people would be looking at it. Also people would have to stand in the perfect angle to view the show which would be impossible to see.

Sorry kids…. this is video editing… not real “3-D” projection.
You site the people standing around watching as proof? Watch more carefully…. there’s two people standing there that don’t move during the shot… and they’re looking at each other, not the building. And all the other people are just walking through… not one of them stops to watch. Don’t you think if something that cool were going on at least a few people would stop to watch?
